Education is rapidly changing along with the rest of the world. Gone are the days of rows of desks with all students facing the front of the classroom towards the teacher that is lecturing at the podium. The industry has shifted away from traditional learning to student-centered pedagogies.

Learning spaces have followed accordingly; however, even classrooms with non-traditional furniture can be used for traditional teaching practices.

That’s the inspiration for the NorvaNivel designed Cloud table. Its non-tessellating shape was designed specifically in such a way that it can be used in any learning environment. The Cloud table will not line up in a nice little row though. Instead, it’s designed to facilitate cooperative and collaborative learning of small groups sharing their thoughts and ideas.

Additionally, with the brilliant option of a writable surface, group work can easily be captured directly on the table. No longer will there be one note taker in the group, everyone is allowed to write. Furthermore, we have also designed the Cloud Flip table, with writable surface, that enables students to easily transition from idea generation to presentation for the class by flipping the table on its side and using their work as a whiteboard.

Educational activities that are social, engaging, and student-owned leads to a more complete understanding of the subject. There are numerous benefits to collaborative learning. There is open student and teacher communication with the small groups. The students learn to accept one another’s opinions and thoughts while working together in a self-managed learning space. This is preparing them at the same time for real life situations where discussion with others is needed and opinions are to be respected.

Where Can You Use the Cloud Table?
The writable Cloud tables are perfect for most all situations. Cloud tables are suited to a variety of learning spaces and learning styles. In classrooms they facilitate collaborative activities and student-centered pedagogies. They are also ideal for breakout spaces and libraries. Cloud tables are perfect for early learners in spelling and math exercises by allowing them to practice right on the writable surface. We also offer a standing height Cloud table that can be used in all of these locations, but is especially great for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) spaces, staff, and administration areas. Standing height tables usually bring even more discussion and energy.

Benefit to the Learner
Not only does the Cloud Table have a non-tessellating shape, but like all of our designs, it was designed to accommodate multiple types of learners. For example, the writable surface is perfect for the visual learner who comprehends information better by charts, diagrams, and pictures. The writable surface allows for all of these to be drawn right on the table. The auditory learner does well at the Cloud Table because it seats five to six students that are collaborating and discussing the topic. This means there is an active discussion that they can participate in. Kinesthetic learners are the hands-on learning types. They like to participate and solve problems in a hands-on manner. The Cloud Table provides each student their own sizable space to do this in. Lastly, the reading and writing learners prefer the written word. They love to take notes and make lists, which the Cloud Table’s writable surface is made for.

The unique shape ensures each students can choose a space to work from most suited to them. Each area of the Cloud table allow a student to have as much or as little personal space they are comfortable with. Ensuring students are comfortable allows them to be more receptive to classroom content.

Research certainly shows educational activities that are social, engaging, and student-owned leads to a more complete understanding of the subject. There are numerous benefits to collaborative learning. There is open student and teacher communication with the small groups. The students learn to accept one another’s opinions and thoughts while working together in a self-managed learning space. This is preparing them at the same time for real life situations where discussion with others is needed and opinions are to be respected.
